Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), also known as Mongolian milkvetch, is a perennial plant in the Fabaceae family that has been used for over 2000 years. It is indigenous to eastern and northern China, as well as Korea and Mongolia, and now grows in estuaries, riverbanks and pine wood forests throughout Asia. The plant grows up to 3 feet tall, has purple flowers, and leaves with up to 18 sets of leaflets. Typically the roots of plants aged four to seven years old are harvested and dried before use.

Astragalus contains a range of bioactive compounds including triterpenoid saponins, bioflavonoids, polysaccharides, glycosides and trace minerals. Of the numerous triterpenoid saponins, five major ones make up more than eighty percent of the total saponins; astragalosides I, II, and IV, and isoastragaloside I and II. Of the many flavonoids, isoflavones are the major constituents.*
