Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as lingzhi mushrooms in China, are bioactive fungi used for thousands of years in Asia and now more widely used around the world. The mushroom’s kidney-shaped, red-brown, varnished appearance make it distinctly different to other mushrooms. In the wild, reishi mushrooms grow at the base of deciduous trees, especially the maple tree, but today they are commonly cultivated in woodchips and sawdust or grown on hardwood logs.

Reishi mushrooms contain a unique combination of bioactive compounds including alkaloids, triterpenoids, sterols, coumarin, and polysaccharides such as beta-glucan and mannitol. They also contain important minerals including potassium, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, iron and zinc, as well as all the essential amino acids, especially lysine and leucine.*
